Gulberg 2 vs Gulberg 3 vs MM Alam
Anyone who has even spent a weekend in Lahore will agree that Gulberg is the real scene of the city. It is not the oldest part of the city, and it is definitely not the quietest, but if you want a central, well-connected, and lively place, this is the neighborhood that gets mentioned again and again. The problem is, “Gulberg” is not a single place – it is a large assortment of blocks, markets, and side streets, and your choice of location can completely alter your experience of the city. So we analyze Gulberg 2, Gulberg 3, the famous MM Alam Road, and what each of them really brings to the table in terms of your lodging, your room, the amenities available, and – since let’s face it, that is half the reason any of us are visiting Lahore – the cuisine.
A Quick Word on the Layout
Before getting into comparisons, it helps to understand how these areas actually sit next to each other, because on a map they can look confusingly close. Gulberg is divided into numbered blocks running roughly from Gulberg I through to Gulberg V, though most visitors only ever hear about two or three of these by name. MM Alam Road isn’t technically its own block – it is a long commercial road that cuts through the area, bordering Gulberg II and Gulberg III, and it has become so famous that people often refer to it as if it were a neighborhood by itself. Liberty Market, another location that you will hear mentioned all the time, is situated at the boundary of Gulberg III. Knowing this roughly explains why a five-minute walk can take you from a quiet residential street to a road lined with restaurants and boutiques.
Gulberg 2: A Quieter, More Residential Choice
If you want a “home” feeling rather than a hotel type stay, Gulberg 2 is usually the quieter one of the three. Most of the accommodation here comprises of houses that have been converted into guesthouses and serviced apartments, some are family homes, some are partly family homes, with gardens, driveways and quite a bit of greenery along the streets. It is such an area where you will hear the chirping of birds rather than the blowing of horns, which, for a city like Lahore, is quite a value.

The rooms in Gulberg 2 are usually quite spacious since the structures were considered as residences first and hotels second. It is common to find fully furnished bedrooms along with bathrooms, a small lounge, and windows that get you a view of the lawn or a tree instead of being next to the wall of another building. These extra provisions are what make a big difference to families and folks travelling with children who will, inevitably, want room to move about.
Regarding amenities, the properties in Gulberg 2 usually offer private parking – a real luxury in central Lahore – backup generators for power outages (and where there will be power cuts at some point after all this is Pakistan), and often a small garden or terrace. Wi-Fi is available at all times, although the speeds depend on the age of the building and the number of users sharing the connection.
The restaurant situation, is that Gulberg 2 is mainly residential rather than a commercial area, therefore, you will not find stacks of cafés right outside your doorstep. However, you will be just a short auto or car ride away from both Liberty Market and MM Alam Road, so the culinary scene is not far at all – just not at your doorstep. There are also a few small neighborhood style eateries located within the markets of Gulberg 2, the kind of places the locals really use rather than having tourist spots, which some visitors like quite a lot discovering.
Gulberg 3:
A Commercial Hub, With Liberty Just Steps Away
When you get to Gulberg 3, you will notice that the atmosphere is definitely a lot livelier and that is exactly why many visitors prefer to stay here. Gulberg 3 is a blend of residential areas and commercial plazas, markets, banks, pharmacies, and small offices. Moreover, staying here means that whatever you want will be a few minutes away from you.

The variety of accommodation in Gulberg 3 is much broader than that of Gulberg 2. You can find boutique hotels, serviced apartments, and guesthouses that operate from the upper floors of commercial buildings. There are still many places that exude a “home” feeling, yet there are also more hotel-like options if that is what you desire — front desks, daily housekeeping, etc.
Since the buildings themselves are so greatly different, the rooms may also vary quite a lot in size and style — some are old houses that have been converted, whereas others are purpose-built apartment blocks. What usually remains unchanged is the fact that you are close to the action, and for some people, that can mean convenience, whereas for others, it can mean a little more noise. So, if you are a light sleeper and your room is facing a main road, it is something to keep in mind.
Properties in Gulberg 3 often provide amenities that are more down-to-earth: elevator in the taller buildings, security bettered by guards on the gate, and closeness to ATMs, pharmacies, and small grocery shops. Actually, these things make an enormous difference to a stay than most people would expect until they find themselves in need of a plaster or a bottle of water at eleven at night.
Last but not least, Liberty Market is located right on the border of Gulberg 3, and it is, in fact, a whole experience in itself — shopping mall to the largest extent, food street in some parts general disorder in the best possible way. The range of food at Liberty is from traditional Lahori street food stalls outdoor to restaurants with seats inside serving everything from desi karahi to fast food. If you choose to stay in Gulberg 3, you will be within walking distance of one of Lahore’s most famous food destinations and, for a great number of travellers, that alone is the reason to come here.
MM Alam Road: A Destination for the Foodies and Night Owls
MM Alam Road, on the other hand, has carved a distinct identity for itself. If Gulberg 2 is the quiet serene and residential spot and Gulberg 3 the practical and versatile one, MM Alam is the dazzling one that everyone desires to be close to, though not all would want to live right on top of it.
Most of the residential spaces directly on or just off MM Alam tend to be quite modern and boutique in style — serviced apartments situated above commercial plazas, smaller but very well equipped, often targeted at business travelers or short-stay guests rather than families on long holidays. The concept of “home” here is less about gardens and verandas and more about having a coffee shop, a gym, and several restaurants just a lift ride away.

Generally, rooms are smaller than those of Gulberg 2 but are typically more modern in design, contemporary fittings, better lighting, sometimes a small kitchenette. The lack in space is compensated by convenience and, to some extent, by the vibrant atmosphere. Going out for breakfast is not a dull routine anymore but a pleasurable affair.
The amenities here are more focused on lifestyle aspects: since the road gets very crowded, valet parking is a common feature, security is usually very strict as there are quite a few high-end shops and restaurants nearby, and many buildings come with lifts, generators, and good internet as standard, because quite a few guests work remotely during their stays.
However, the main attraction of MM Alam Road is, no doubt, the food, and it is quite a loud one. This area is filled with restaurants and cafés offering almost every cuisine that you can think of, from Lahori and Pakistani classics to Italian, Chinese, Thai, and everything else, plus a continuous supply of new cafés that seem to be opening every couple of months. It is also one of the few places in Lahore that really gets going at night, with many places staying open well beyond what you would expect on a “school night.”

So, Which One Should You Actually Pick?
It really depends on what kind of travel experience you are looking for. For instance, if you have a family with you, plan to stay for a longer time, or just want a place that feels like a real home with a little garden and fresh air, there are hardly any places comparable to Gulberg 2 — however, you should be ready for a bit longer trips to the restaurants and markets. If you desire a mixture of practicality, shopping and eating, with Liberty Market only a short walk away and a great variety of accommodation styles to pick from, Gulberg 3 fits most requirements without being too extreme in any direction. And if you want a lively atmosphere, convenience and a dining scene that is a match for any other part of the city — especially if you are here on business or for a short vacation — MM Alam Road will be the best for you, but you have to be willing to tolerate some noise around your window.
A Few Practical Things Worth Knowing
Regardless of which area, a few things are true for all three of them. Traffic in Gulberg is heavy during the evening rush hour and dinner time, so if you are booking a restaurant on MM Alam while staying at Gulberg 2, allow yourself more time than Google Maps shows. Parking becomes more difficult as you move closer to MM Alam, therefore properties that have their own parking facilities — which are commonly found in Gulberg 2 and less so in other areas — are definitely worth asking about beforehand. And even though power cuts are less common now than before, they still occur, so a place that has its own generator or UPS backup is not really a luxury but a basic comfort, particularly in the hot months.
In the end, Gulberg, on the whole, is the most accessible area for a base you will find in Lahore, and the differences between Gulberg 2, Gulberg 3 and MM Alam have nothing to do with “good” and “bad”; rather, they are about different lifestyles. Quiet versus busy, residential versus commercial, home-like versus hotel-like. Once you understand what kind of accommodation you desire, it will become a lot easier to choose between them — and whichever one you opt for, you will never be very far from all the things that this part of the city has to offer.
